The Marathon des Sables is often described as the toughest footrace on Earth. In 2011, the 26th anniversary year, it will cover approximately 250km (160 miles) run over 6 days - equivalent to more than six regular marathons over sand dunes, rocky desert, and stony ground with temperatures of up to 50°C (120°F). On the 4th day, I will set off across the desert to complete a 50 mile stage - this is followed the next day by a 42km (26.2 mile) Marathon stage!!

In addition, I will have to carry everything I need for the duration of the race, apart from a tent, on my back in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag, stove, fuel, etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint; I will get approximately 10.5 – 12 litres per day, which I will also have to carry (1 litre = 1 kg).

The heat, distance and rubbing will trash my feet. Mental stamina probably constitutes at least 50% of whether I will complete the race or not.  The rules state that I will be disqualified if I require more than 2 intravenous drips. Luckily there is an insurance policy covering medical evacuation and corpse repatriation in the event of death!

I am trying to raise as much money as possible for my charity, Get Kids Going, a national charity which gives disabled children and young people the opportunity of participating in sport. I have chosen to support this charity because sport has always been so important to me and I would like to help others – less able bodied children who may not otherwise be able to – have the opportunity to access and participate in sport.
