Emmaus tackles the problems of homelessness through a network of self-supporting Communities, where people are offered a home, work and a sense of belonging. Emmaus residents (or "Companions" as they are known), each have a room of their own and work together, refurbishing and selling donated goods. Each Emmaus Community aims to become self-sufficient through raising income in this way. In an atmosphere of practical support, Companions have an opportunity to gain new skills and regain their self-respect while working to support other people in greater need. Emmaus UK is the national charity which supports existing Communities and assists the network of Groups which are working to develop new projects.

My story

I'm off to Italy at the end of November to take part in the Florence Marathon, and to raise funds for Emmaus. This is a secular movement that helps homeless people rebuild their lives. They are provided with a home and work in a “Community”, a supportive, family environment that enables them to develop skills, rebuild their self-respect and help others in greater need.

They receive accommodation, food, clothing and a small weekly allowance, but for many, the greatest benefit is a fresh start. They sign off unemployment benefits and agree to participate in the life and work of the Community and abide by its rules, for example not bringing in drugs or alcohol.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
