Story
To be played 27th August 2013...
Diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in September 2011 at 45 with a wife and two children with out an indication I was ill I was told the path for CML was certain death in 3 to 5 years without a bone marrow transplant prior to early 2000’s, otherwise a year at that time for a transplant if a donor could be found with success of 60% ish. However along came Imatinib, the wonder drug ( TKI ) Then 10 years of evidence now give belief of a normal life span WOW, imagine being told you have Leukaemia, then told this is the best one to have, what a difference.
While some fail Imatinib there are now 3 TKI’s in the UK with 2 more under review so now 95% of us will survive and lead a normal or near normal life for many many years. No illness of a ” real “ kind, no pain, no death.
This is all due to research and dedicated Doctors and scientist. This can hit anyone, very rare but this could be you , and will be 10 more people this week in the UK. Many will develop other illness’s and so money is needed to help others get to the place we CML’ers are at for research and for care, this is why I have chosen these two charities. Please donate and dig deep.
A keen squash player all my all life and still playing well ( well, well for me ) I emailed Nick Matthew World Squash Number 1 and asked if we could play to raise money, within a hour or two I had an emphatic yes. Indeed this then moved on to playing the England squash all top world ranked players. Name me another sport where world class players would do this so freely, thus THANKS Nick and the squad.
