Story

The Nora Sturges Health Centre in Lobito, Angola was opened in August 2003 by Bishop Graham Dow and his son Alastair. Lobito is a busy port on the Atlantic Coast, near the old Portuguese city of Benguela and around 300km. south of the capital Luanda. To view further photos click on photos.

Nora Sturges, mother of Molly Dow, died in December 1999. She was a doctor in public health. The family gave a gift to the Anglican Church in Angola to build the Centre. This was in gratitude to God for Nora and for her return to Christan Faith in the last 2 weeks of her life.

Bishop Graham visited the Centre again in 2005 and most recently in August 2010 with sons Jamie and Michael and Michael's father-in-law, Ainslie Kelly.

The Centre offers health provision to many who live in a poor neighbourhood of Lobito. In Angola 70% of disease is malaria related.

The Centre receives no support from the Angolan government; its only income is gifts from the UK and a very modest income from those who use its services. If it is to be effective it needs a reliable income on a monthly basis to pay for drugs, medical supplies and staff wages. If the Centre is put on a firm foundation financially, the government is more likely to offer support and give it 'clinic' status.

DEVELOPMENTS

Since 2005 the Christian community around the Centre has built a church.

They also hope to extend the Centre to provide a maternity unit. They need an ambulance to take serious cases to the hospital. They have land on which a church school could be built and there is a local need for this.

The immediate need is to give the Centre a secure regular income. In due course a separate page will be created for the capital projects mentioned above.

BUDGET - for the day to day running of the centre - as offered by the staff for effective management of the Centre

Staff 9 medical and 2 guards. Average wage for the medical staff is £2556pa. Total £ 25,650pa.

Medical resources including drugs. Total £16,903pa. Full annual total £42,553

DONATIONS

Just Giving handles Gift Aid recovery and for every £100 given £119 is paid to MANNA for the Nora Sturges Health Centre. Molly and Graham welcome gifts small or large. In order to provide the Centre with a regular monthly income, it is preferable for your kind gifts to be set up as a monthly payment by credit card.

With Gift Aid to be added, the total amount to be raised needs eg. 300 gifts of £10 monthly (or £120 pa), or 200 gifts of £15 monthly (£180 pa), or 100 gifts of £30 monthly (£360 pa).
