2 SCOTS IN PEAK CONDITION FOR

2 SCOTS will soon be deploying on Operation Herrick to with 16 Air Assault Brigade.  The Noshaq Challenge is intended to raise funds for the 2 SCOTS charity – whitehackle.com.  It will involve four members of the Battalion climbing to the equivalent height of Mount Noshaq, Afghanistan’s highest peak, a distance of 7,492 meters of elevation; but instead of doing it in the Hindu Kush they will complete the challenge by climbing Arthur’s Seat – 41 times!

THE CHALLENGE

On the morning of Friday 9th July, a base camp will be set up in Hollywood Park from which the intrepid team will set off carrying the equivalent of a soldier’s combat load in Afghanistan (about 60 bags of sugar).  Over the course of the day the team will climb and descend to the top of Arthur’s Seat a gruelling 41 times.  It is hoped the challenge will raise awareness of 2 SCOTS imminent deployment to as well as raising money to support the families of bereaved and injured Scottish Soldiers.   

NOSHAQ

Noshaq is the highest mountain in . It is located in the north-eastern corner of the country along the Durand line which marks the border with . The north and west sides of the mountain are in whereas the south and eastern sides are in . It reaches a height of 7,492 metres.

2 SCOTS ON OPERATIONS

2 SCOTS are based at Glencorse Barracks in .  They are  a Light Role Infantry Battalion and are currently part of 16 Air Assault Brigade.  5 SCOTS, based in , are also part of the Brigade.  2 SCOTS are in the final stages of their preparations to deploy as a Battle Group on Operation Herrick in .  This is the second time the Battalion has been to ; two years ago they had a successful tour of as the Security Sector Reform Battle Group. 

 HISTORY OF 2 SCOTS

 The Royal Highland Fusiliers (Princess Margaret's Own Glasgow and Ayrshire Regiment) was a regular Scottish line infantry Regiment of the British Army, part of the Scottish Division, and abbreviated as 'The RHF'. The Regiment was formed on 20 January 1959 by the amalgamation of the Royal Scots Fusiliers with the Highland Light Infantry (City of ). The Regiment itself was  amalgamated with the other Regiments of the Scottish Division to become part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and is now known as the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS), and was formed on 28 March 2006.
