Story

Assalamu Alaikum,

In 1990 a group of dedicated Muslims in Oldham embarked upon a mission to provide facilities and services for the communities in Oldham and decided to acquire a property. In short succession the level of work expanded and it was decided that more space was required. As the work grew over the years another two properties were bought on Chadderton Way to cater for the ever increasing needs of the community.

At first it seemed generously spacious, but before long it began to overflow, there was hardly room for the growing number of projects based at the centre. In August 2001, the trust begins to search for a land or a building to accommodate its plans. In September 2002 an offer of £41,000 is accepted for a land on Dunbar Street. Preparation for the purpose built Oldham Muslim Centre begins and planning permission is granted for the OMC in February 2005. The cost of the building totalled to a staggering £2m and thus a fundraising strategy is initiated, which included the ‘Expoislamia: A Call to Humanity Convention’ in August 2006.

In April 2007, after careful consideration the OMC Management decides to re-locate the OMC at Compass House, a sale of £1.9m is agreed. An intense fundraising campaign begins, to raise the deposit for the Compass House and an unprecedented level of support is shown by the community. Within eight months from June 2007 commitments of over £1m is secured and a total of £600 thousand is raised from the sale of the land at Dunbar Street and donations from the local community. The keys for the Compass House are received in January 2008 and on the 24th February 2008 ‘Vision Becomes Reality’ - the doors of the new Oldham Muslim Centre are opened to the public.
