After Owen’s sudden death in January 2011, the Corrigan family wanted to create a memorial to him. We decided to raise funds in aid of the Chesney Trust for Education in Malawi. The Trust is working to advance the education of girls in Northern Malawi by building and running a girls’ secondary school in Engcongolweni. The school will make a real difference to this remote community by providing employment and improving the infrastructure.
The Trust aims to improve health services, adult literacy, women’s safety and provide access to clean water and electricity for the local community. To date, the Trust has built a bridge to access the school site, two classroom blocks, a maize mill, toilet block and accommodation.
Before the next phase of the project can begin, the school requires a fresh water supply. At present, there is no fresh water in the local area. We have already raised enough money to drill boreholes and, as a result, water has been found 65 metres down and 600 metres from the school. Further funds are needed to pipe the water to the site and to install a solar pump and storage tanks.
Owen was known for his kindness and generosity and was always willing to help people, especially those less fortunate than himself. We feel that this is something he would have approved of and will leave a lasting legacy in his name.
The well is to be named Ojo’s Well and a plaque will be placed beside it in his memory.
