Draft Press Release
A fireman from Norfolk is swapping his fire engine for the height of Kilimanjaro in an epic walking trek to raise vital funds for charity.

Pete Sheedy, 54, from Poringland, is tackling the arduous climb in one week leaving on the 18 January to raise money for the NNUH charity and Banham Zoo. Pete’s money for the hospital charity will benefit Hethel Ward fund, which looks after patients with respiratory conditions. Pete’s late wife experience the care and dedication of the team from this ward during her illness and Pete wanted to give something back to the hospital and help other patients.

It will take Pete and the other 14 people from Norfolk five arduous days to complete the 35-mile trek from the entry gate to the summit, climbing for up to 14 hours per day. Standing almost 6,000 metres above sea level, Kilimanjaro is the world’s highest free-standing mountain, and aside from the small issue of dealing with the altitude, Pete and the other climbers also have to cope with temperature extremes ranging from -30 degrees to 30 degrees centigrade. It’s estimated that around one-third of those that attempt to reach Kilimanjaro’s peak fail to do so.

Pete said,“ I started training last June for the climb and my work with the fire brigade keep me very fit. My colleagues have been very supportive of my climb.’’

Louise Cook, Fundraising Manager said: “Our hats go off to Pete for signing up to this fundraising trek which really will be quite the challenge. It’s with huge gratitude that we wish him the very best of luck and I hope lots of people dig deep to help us in our work.”
