We believe that all pets should have access to veterinary care – regardless of their owners’ financial situation. Over 100 years, we’ve helped more than 20 million sick and injured pets – providing life-saving vet care to more vulnerable pets than any other animal charity in the UK today.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Ottis' JustGiving page.

You can sponsor Ottis on his weight loss journey here. All donations will help PDSA treat the thousands of sick and injured pets our vets and nurses see each day.

Introducing Ottis

An overweight Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from Edinburgh, who eats everything in sight and has even been known to steal food from the bin, has been picked to take part in Pet Fit Club.

Weight story

Adopted by new owner Helen Melrose a year-and-a-half ago from a friend, Ottis was already overweight on arrival at his new home. But he has continued to pile on the pounds and now weighs in at a hefty 11.3kg, making him 41% heavier than a healthy dog of his size should be.

Vital Stats

Current weight: 11.3kg

% overweight: 41%

Ideal weight: 8kg

Bad Habits

Ottis will happily munch anything from tuna and chicken to fruit. Helen, who says Ottis is like her shadow and always wants to be the centre of attention, said: “Ottis has such a big personality, and he likes to get his own way! He loves sleeping and has four beds, but prefers the couch! He will eat everything in sight if he gets the opportunity, and even steals food from my grandchildren.”

PDSA Vet Advice

Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, said: “Excess pounds can contribute to a number of serious health conditions and, sadly, it does reduce life expectancy. But the good news is that it’s never too late to make positive changes to a pet’s diet and lifestyle.”

PDSA advises that owners always consult their own vet for dog diet and pet exercise advice.
