At least 21 people with epilepsy in the UK die each week. SUDEP Action, is the only UK charity dedicated to supporting those bereaved by epilepsy, raising awareness of epilepsy risks and tackling deaths in people with epilepsy, including Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

To mark reaching the age of 70, I am walking the highest 70 tops in the Lake District and would like to use this challenge to raise money in memory of my great niece Amy Marsden who died suddenly in 2013 aged 21.

Amy suffered from epilepsy, but despite this condition was studying for a BA in English at De Montfort University.  A few weeks before her final exams she died from SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy).  The University later awarded her a posthumous degree.

Epilepsy claims about 1150 lives a year in the UK each, and about 500 of these are SUDEP deaths. It strikes down all ages but in particular young people in the prime of life in the age range from the late teens to thirty.  About 40% of these deaths could be preventable through education, awareness and regular use of the right medication.  SUDEP Action is a small, dedicated charity: please support me and help them to do all that they can to prevent unnecessary deaths from epilepsy. All monies raised will be given to SUDEP Action to support their education and research programme.

The challenge is to walk the 70 highest tops in the Lake District.  A 'top' may be the summit of a fell (mountain) or a high point on a ridge or plateau.  They are all over 2,570 feet (783 Metres) and occur in all the high ranges in the Lake District.

The challenge was completed on 1 October 2014, when, with a group of friends, I reached the summit of the Old Man of Coniston - some say an appropriate mountain on which to finish.  In total the challenge has involved 46,500 feet of ascent, 134 miles fellwalking in 96 hours, spread over 7 trips to the Lakes and 15 walks.  I would like to thank all my walking companions - Clive Hutchinson, Chris Brisbourne, Paul Knight, Martin Paine and Gerald Glover, without whom I could not have finished the walks.

And of course, a great thanks to everyone who has made a donation to the SUDEP Charity - your response has been magnificent.

Thank you
