Please take a moment to dream with me...

Please picture a young girl you care about who is 8 - 12 years old. Your daughter in a few years perhaps? Your niece? Ok, now picture her typical day; she probably wakes up in her cozy bed, sings her way through a long warm shower, grabs a bowl of cereal and runs out the door to school. She will grow up to be well educated, get a good job and enjoy a comfortable future. She may meet Mr. Right and choose to have her own children and continue the cycle for another generation.

Now please picture Gloria with me. She is 10 years old. She wakes up to a different set of circumstances, not by her own choosing; Gloria doesn't have many choices in life. She wakes up on a hard mat in the only room in the hut where her family lives in a remote village in Uganda. She 'enjoys' a scant breakfast and watches as her brothers go off to school, but Gloria's fate is different. She must go to collect water in order for her family to survive this day. The road to the watering hole is a dangerous one frequented by predators (animals and humans). She walks the 5 Kilometers to collect dirty, infectious water for her family from a source shared by animals. She walks another 5 Kilometers home carrying 20 Kilograms of water, hoping and praying she doesn't get attacked/abused...again. When she makes it home, 6 hours after she left, there is little time left for education; there is dinner to be made and work to be done. 'Mr Right' may be chosen for her, or perhaps 'Mr. Not-so-Right', either way she will most likely have children in her teenage years. She will then have to watch her own little girls take the same arduous journey she took each day, hoping and praying they don't get attacked/abused...again. Not much of a life for a child, is it?

Now it is time to dream of a different future. A better future. A future where Gloria only needs to walk a short distance to a well that has been drilled in her village. A well that supplies Gloria and her family fresh water, free of disease and that does not require a dangerous and painstakingly long journey. Gloria has now recaptured the time stolen from her; time she can now use to learn in school. And play - she is still a child after-all! With an education Gloria has choices for the first time in her life. She moves to the city. She gets a good job. She chooses Mr. Right. She chooses children and she chooses that they too will have a bright future. This is the power of choice. This is the power of digging a well.

If you've read this far, thank you for choosing to dream this with me. If you would like to choose to be a part of making this dream a reality for Gloria and the many other girls just like her, please go to http://fieldsoflife.org/
