All Hands and Hearts addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by disasters. By listening to local people, and deploying volunteers, we rebuild safe, resilient community infrastructure. 100% of all funds raised by the UK Trust go directly to those in need.
Story
I'm sure most of you know that this summer I have been spending time in the Philippines getting a tan, having loads of fun and occasionally, you know, digging a ditch or laying a floor to help rebuild Tacloban after Typhoon Haiyan. All Hands Volunteers have, amongst many other invaluable efforts, so far built 146 transitional shelters for the people of Tacloban who lost their homes in November and I have had the amazing opportunity to be a part of the team of volunteers making that happen.
We've joined together to raise 1.1 million Philippine Pesos between now and the 9th of November, the one year anniversary of Super-Typhoon Yolanda. Although huge progress has been made, 31,000 of those affected by the typhoon still go to bed each night in tents or without adequate housing. With 1.1 million pesos (US$25,188.92), one peso for every house that was destroyed, we can construct nine new homes and strengthen the communities in which they are built.
To kick off this campaign, 37 of us are joining a run taking place in Tacloban City - even me, the girl who detests running. But it's for a good cause so I will run 5k in the heat of the Philippines on one condition: you give me (the deserving people of Tent City) money for it!!
We want to raise the first 120,000 pesos, which is enough money to build a new house for a family who had their home destroyed in Barangay 83-C. I'm aiming to raise over 1,800 pesos towards that total.
Well done if you managed to read all of that and I hope I have inspired (guilt-tripped) you enough that you could donate just a little bit of money and support a great project. Thank you all and I'll see you back in England soon!
