Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my Trek The Sahara page.
About Me
I have Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and the long and the short of it is, I am losing my vision. I am completing this Trek to raise the profile of RP Fighting Blindness and the great work they do. According to my family, I am definitely not a 'heat' person, so this is quite a challenge. I will post regular updates, so bookmark the page and return often.
About RP
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the name given to a group of inherited conditions of the retina, that lead to a gradual progressive reduction in vision. Difficulties with night vision and peripheral vision are the first things that are noticed. Later, reading vision, colour vision and central vision are affected. The rate of deterioration often varies - for example with the different genetic types - but is generally very slow with changes occurring over years rather than months. In approximately half of all cases there are other family members with RP.
About The Sahara
The Sahara desert extends from the Atlantic Ocean eastward past the Red Sea to Iraq. The entire desert, the largest in the world, is about about 1,000 miles wide and about 3,200 miles long from east to west. The total area of the Sahara is more than 3,500,000 sq miles of which some 80,000 sq miles consists of partially fertile oases. The boundaries of the Sahara are the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Atlas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Red Sea and Egypt to the east, and the Sudan and the valley of the Niger River to the south. The boundaries, however, are not clearly defined and have been shifting for millennia.
