About the Police Unity Tour (UK)

The Police Unity tour has its origins in the United States. In May 1997 the Police Unity Tour was organized, by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department, with the hope of bringing public awareness of Police Officers who have died in the line of duty and to honour their sacrifices. What started with 18 riders on a four day fund-raising bicycle ride from Florham Park, NJ to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Has grown into 8 Chapters consisting of nearly 1700 members nationwide who make the trip annually.

Rob Atkin and Gary Byfield both currently serving with the Metropolitan Police have had the honour of riding as part of the United States Police Unity Tour and have witnessed first hand the immense sense of pride in riding in memory of Police Officers who have died whilst on duty. Both have a long association with Care of Police Survivors and have been supporters of the charity since its inception 10 years ago.

May 2013 saw the first Police Unity Tour in the United Kingdom. Leaving the National Police Memorial in the Mall, police officers, police staff, survivors and Police Officers from the United States rode approximately 180 miles to the National Arboretum in Staffordshire. The event culminated in riding into the Annual Care of Police Survivors memorial weekend, which is attended by families of officers killed in the line of duty from around the United Kingdom along with every Chief Constable or Deputy. Every person who rides, rides in memory of a fallen officer. Each officer has a bracelet which is engraved with that officers details including the date of their last duty. One of the most memorable parts of the ride is being able to present that officer's family with the bracelet - ensuring that they know their loved one will never be forgotten. It is truly a humbling experience.
