Many visitors will be aware that in May 2009 I ran my very first 10K road race. With the help of my daughter and a team of Explorer Scouts we raised a fantastic £1732 for Malawi.
A couple of months later the fragile nature of our human existence was brought sharply into focus.
Steve Tucker a forty something football referee , father and thoroughly decent man died suddenly. Two days earlier and perhaps even more shockingly a local 17 year old footballer Jack Boulton, cricketer and all round good sportsman collapsed and died at football training.
My own father has had a triple heart bypass and more recently the modern and alternative 'cure' of stents. My mother has a heart murmur.
We can all minimise risk to an extent by leading a healthy lifestyle, but what of the sudden unexpected and 'mysterious' sudden deaths? What can be done?
Well maybe the British Heart Foundation can provide some of the answers but cash is needed. Your cash!
Many of you will have supported me in the past and I hope will do so again.
In 2010 I ran a very hilly Pensford 10K raising £1,213 and 2011 a further £1054 for the Keynsham 10K.
For 2012 I am stepping it up a notch.
On Sunday 13th May I will be taking part in the Transbaie. See the course here. An approx 10 MILE run across the normally submerged St Valery Sur Somme estuary in France. Not sure what sort of friends they really are but I was invited to take part by our french friends who live nearby! All I know is it will be tough going. Runners that usually complete a 10K in around 45 minutes take about 1 hour 40 minutes. My best 10K is just over 51 minutes. If I can complete it in under 2 hours......sorry let me think...if I can complete it , I will be chuffed!
HSBC Bank will match every £1 raised up to £500 so effectively each £1 donated could be over £2 to the British Heart Foundation when adding back tax relief. (£5 could become more than £11)
If a more dramatic example of why support were needed then the events of the weekend 18th March 2012 and the sudden collapse of Fabrice Muamba surely provides it.
So please give as much as you can afford to give me that extra incentive to get out and train for the Transbaie 2012. I do need the motivation! For all those referees out there how about half your next match fee? With the £ 4 £ scheme effectively a full fee!
