Participants: Over 100 people from across the University are involved, some walking the whole Pennine Way, others (like me) just escorting them in from Edale to Sheffield.

The Big Walk 2015 - University of Sheffield · 17 September 2015 ·
We are doing significant research on lung disease at the University of Sheffield - particularly on Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. Most of the 500 or so patients diagnosed annually with this disease die within 5 years - a worse prognosis than for almost any cancer. The diease blocks the tiny arteries in the lungs and this puts great strain on the heart, ultimately bringing on heart failure. About 2 in every 1000 newborn babies have the condition to some extent. At Sheffield we are making great advances in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. We are raising money through a sponsored walk (20 staff, students and alumni will complete the Pennine Way, with a further 120-150 escorting the walkers in from the end-point in Edale to the University itself: I will be in this group, walking 18 miles). The funds we raise will support the employment of a research technician, will fund research students, and will contribute towards the appointment of a non-clinical lecturer to carry out research and to teach medical students about the disease.
