A Day in the Lakes · 27 June 2010

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for “A Day in the Lakes.”  Idyllic it may sound, but ADIL isn’t quite that.  It’s a triathlon, and it’s:

-          1.2 miles swimming in the cold deep waters of Ullswater – that’ll take about as long as a 10k run;

-          56 miles cycling around the Lake District from the North of Ullswater, over Kirkstone Pass (the highest road in England), down east of Windermere then back over Shap Fell; few flat sections, and that’ll take me about as long as a marathon would, and then;

         -13 miles run, a half-marathon distance (the same distance as the Great North Run), but on roads, trails and fells along the base of Barton Fell taking in Howtown, Fusedale and Martindale

This time I’m looking to raise serious money for the Alzheimer’s Society, in the name of my father in law Bernard Ward OBE as well as of my stepchildren’s Grandma Gill. Bernard is a great man - from a very humble background, he left school early and played professional football for Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough United, using his wages to pay for his education in metallurgy. He became the MD of his company, and latterly the Master of the Birmingham Assay office. Now, with Alzheimer’s, there is little trace of that person, and that's the type of tragedy that Alzheimer’s brings.

I'm doing the hard bit -  so all you need to do is give!

So please dig deep and donate now.
