Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer. Founded in 1974, by growing our register of stem cell donors, conducting research and supporting patients, Anthony Nolan cures blood cancer and blood disorders. But we need to do more. Without you, there is no cure.

I will be taking part in a bike ride on Sunday 26th of May 2013.

This great ride is now in its eighth year, and we've added a fantastic 55 mile route for all those riders who're seeking a challenge - and aren't so keen on taking their road bikes along the Manchester Canal towpath!

The mostly traffic-free 40 mile route is ideal for family cycling and takes you along part of the Manchester Ship Canal towards Liverpool and the Mersey while the longer, all on-road 60 mile route, crosses the canal to Culcheth and Rainford before passing through Knowsley Park Estate to meet the riders on the short route heading for the finish at Otterspool Park, on the banks of the Mersey.

I am fundraising for is the Anthony Nolan charity.

About the charity:

For the past 35 years, we’ve been the best chance for thousands of people who’ve urgently needed stem cell transplants. We’re good at what we do, but we know that for every person we help, there is another who misses that chance. Our mission has always been to save lives so we’re going to do better. For some people, it really does mean the difference between life and death.

We’ve got a long history of innovation. We created the world’s first register of people willing to donate their stem cells and now we have the UK’s first dedicated cord blood bank. Our research institute is one of the leading in the world. We constantly seek ways to improve the success of stem cell transplants using cutting edge technology.

Every one of Anthony Nolan’s staff channels our forward-thinking vision, from signing up record numbers of potential lifesavers to banking hundreds of precious cords.

In 1971, Anthony Nolan was born with a rare condition called Wiskott Aldrich. The only known cure was a bone marrow transplant, but there was no process or system to find a matching donor. 1973 saw the first successful bone marrow transplant between unrelated donors - previously, matches had only been made through relatives. His mother Shirley had a vision: to start a bone marrow register that would connect potential donors with people like her son, who desperately needed a transplant. At present, over 3,000 blood stem cell (which is found in bone marrow) transplants take place every year. It all began with this legacy that saved and continues to save thousands of lives.
