The Great Generation is an international charity which works closely with local organisations to identify volunteer projects that are community-driven and tackle real needs. Projects last two weeks and involve a team of volunteers whose skills, experiences and enthusiasm enable them to achieve a huge amount in a short time.

This is what I am raising money for....

English Language Capacity Project in Uganda Jinja, Uganda 5th - 16th July 2010 (2 weeks)

About this project

Building on from the success of the last project, in 2010 a new group of students will work in partnership with a community development project with our Expert Partner. The project will involve working at local schools delivering English language classes and cultural exchanges. The project will also include setting up small libraries at the schools, including publicising the library and setting up a book borrowing system. And an additional element of the project is to develop a model home garden to grow produce for consumption and sale at local markets.

Students are asked to fundraise a set amount of money that covers your flights, food, local transport and accommodation. Most of the services we use on the project, such as accommodation, food and transport, are sourced from the community you will be working in to help stimulate the local economy.

The fundraising also goes towards the community in two ways. One part helps to set up a microfinance fund in the community, which is used to help local people create livelihoods for themselves. The second part is provided as an infrastructure grant to the community.

Students attend two half-day briefings, which will help them to prepare for their project and start to learn about the community they will be living in for the two weeks.

So please dig deep and donate now :-)
