In the UK, a woman dies every two hours from ovarian cancer. As the leading ovarian cancer research charity, we’re working to change that. By finding new and better ways to prevent, treat and detect ovarian cancer, we will ensure a future where no woman dies of ovarian cancer.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Three weeks before my holiday to Jamaica I had symptoms of a urine infection. This was my only reason for visiting the doctors- so that I'd have enough antibiotics if necessary whilst away on holiday. Little did my family and I know of the shock that was waiting. Tests and scans were carried out immediately, and less than two days later (on the 23rd December 2011), I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Telling those closest to me was (and will always be) the hardest thing I've had to do in my life; especially at this time of the year.

After having routine checks such as smears etc, I didn't think it would be anything to do with the ovaries. Yet ovarian cancer is not found through such tests. I then realised I should raise awareness to other females who may think the same as me due to having the checks, and may think everything is okay when really- it may not be.

I realised that the best way to raise awareness was to help raise money for Ovarian Cancer Action and also have it publisised in the local paper. The first fundraising I decided to do was to have my hair shaved off to a number 2. I could not bear to let my hair fall out onto my pillow, therefore it gave me the idea to make the loss of my hair seem worthwhile. I am a hairdresser so having my hair shaved off I thought would be very emotional, yet believe it or not I have not shed a single tear (although family and friends have). I found that raising money helped me to accept losing my locks as it all went to a extremely worthwhile cause. A grand total of £393 was raised on the evening, besides donations being given through my Just giving site.

As well as having my hair shaved at "Chic Hair" (Wigston Magna, Leicester), we're also doing a tea and coffee week. Chic Hair have kindly given us their venue free of charge to hold a girlie pamper evening with some of my dear family and friends, with beauticians and hairdressers included (who kindly spared their free time) not forgetting to say a beautiful meal. The pamper evening was originally taking place the week prior to my Chemotherpy treatment starting, however my treatment was brought forward by a week. After being at the hospital for over seven hours it was time to get ready for what was a fantastic evening. A grand total of £840 was raised, all of which is going to the charity. I'd like to say a big, big thankyou to everybody who made this possible.

My wonderful husband Neil had his head shaved (on number half- next to bold) on the 10th February. He raised a staggering grand total of £1,230. Thanyou Darling xxxx, I love you with all my heart xxxx (I think you actually raised more money than myself for having your hair shaved).

I would like to show my gratitude and thanks to all my wonderful family and friends for all their sincere love, devotion and caring that they continuously show me.

A big big thankyou to everybody who has kindly donated to my JustGiving page. This means a great deal to me.

I would also like to thank all the people who do not know me personally that have most generously contributed.

100% proceeds made go to the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.
