Regain is an exceptional charity - it is unique because of the people it helps. They are generally young, able bodied, sporty men and woman who have broken their necks and subsequently feel as if their life is over. Regain helps them to deal with the reality of being paralysed from the neck down and gives financial assistance to adapt their homes, buy voice activated computers, adapted cars, sports wheelchairs. Anything that can help them to regain some independence and quality of life after their horrendous accident.
Each year, I accompany 50 able bodied cyclists and 5 tetraplegics on a fundraising 500 km cycle trip to far flung corners of the world. These trips are life changing for all of us, most significantly, they give my tetraplegic friends HOPE. It is a always a serious challenge for them and for all of us. Regain supplies specially adapted hand cycles which are battery operated but also require alot of extra pedal pushing power from those of us who are fit and able. We work as a team to navigate the mountainous terrain and it is inspirational to watch a tetraplegic, sometimes with partial use of their arms, to give all the mental and physical strength they have to complete the trip.
I obviously pay for my own travel costs and every penny I raise goes directly to Regain. They in turn give assistance to any tetraplegic who has been injured through sport. They can get assistance with adapting their home, buying voice activated computers, adapted cars, sports wheelchairs - anything that will help them regain some independence after their accident and horrendous time in hospital.
