From 23rd September to 25th we - Gwyn Griffiths, Alan Owen and Irfon Davies - will climb Pen y Fan (South Wales), Cader Idris (Mid Wales), Snowdon (North Wales), Scarfell Pike (highest point in England), and Ben Nevis (highest point in Scotland) within 48 hours (or thereabouts!). We don't know of anyone who has set out to complete this challenge before.
We are doing this because we want to show our support for #teamirfon. #teamirfon is a campaign set up by our friend, Irfon Williams, and his family to raise £20k to support the Alaw Unit in Ysbyty Gwynedd where he is currently receiving treatment for bowel cancer.
Through #teamirfon Irfon wants to raise awareness of the importance of looking after your mental health whilst living with cancer. This is close to Irfon's heart as both he and his wife are psychiatric nurses by profession, and Irfon is currently receiving treatment for cancer in Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.
The number of people with cancer is increasing. By 2020, almost one in two peopel will get cancer.
Cancer can affect people's mental health, but having access to complementary therapies, couselling services and nice bespoke wigs can really help patients and families living with a cancer diagnosis. These extra services are funded by donations through the NHS Charity in North Wales, Awyr Las.
Exceptional care needs exceptional support, and that's why I want to do this exceptional challenge. Through showing your support for our Pen to Ben Challenge, you won't just be putting a smile on our faces and Irfon's face - you'll be helping 1000's more people in North Wales.
