On July 15th my mother Angela passed away in Salisbury Hospice having finally succumbed to the cancer that she had been living with for 5 years. Almost exactly a week later her first grandchild, Niamh Angel was born at St Michael's Hospital in Bristol. Whilst it was a great disappointment that my Mum never got to meet to her granddaughter she lived her last few months with the knowledge that one was on the way and that gave her great pleasure.

As well as being an avid sunbather, a creative and accomplished embroiderer and a friend to many, my Mum will be remembered most for her love of sport and outdoor activity. She was a PE teacher for over 40 years, represented the West of England at hockey and loved to play and coach tennis. She also managed the public tennis court in Woodfalls near Salisbury, the village where my parents lived for many years providing the local community all year round with access to this great facility and alongside my Dad shared a love of sailing and the sea in general. Through her job and her determined personality she inspired hundreds of people of all ages to lead and enjoy an active lifestyle, not least myself and my sister Anna.

So thanks to my Mum I can safely say that I have excelled in being completely average in a whole range of sports!

On this note I have decided to make an average attempt at running the Bristol Half marathon for the second time in her memory and to raise money for the Salisbury Hospicecare Trust, the fundraising arm of the Salisbury Hospice, in recognition of the fantastic palliative care that my mother received in her final week of life.

It amazes me that the Trust needs to raise £800,000 per year to maintain and develop the services based at the Hospice because without it these services would not exist.

Last year I ran the half marathon in 2 hours, 1 minute and 37 seconds blowing up badly in the last mile. This year I am aiming to break the 2 hour barrier. Given that I only started training on August 1st this may actually be quite difficult so any money that you feel that you can donate will be much appreciated and will act as a decent incentive when I hit the wall running up that hill by the Galleries car park!

Thanks in advance.

Pete
