How did it happen?

Last May, whilst watching the Cup Final, I was lamenting the fact that due to my gammy legs I am unable to do a lot of exercise. I stated that I was jealous of people who could train and complete marathons, and that such endeavors were beyond my grasp. A few beers later I turned to my friend Steve and stated that “we should try that Devizes to Westminster Canoe thing”. For some reason Steve thought that this was a great idea!

By lucky chance Devizes Canoe Club had just been created, so one Thursday evening Steve and I wandered down to the wharf and made our intentions known. Our initial efforts were far from successful. The first time we paddled together the combined distance of our three attempts to get away from the wall of the Wharf was around 1 yard before falling in. Surely there was no way that such as we could consider taking part in what is the longest event of it’s kind in the world? We were literally too wet behind the ears. 

We decided to persevere and through hard work and the patience and help of the club we began to find our sea legs and over time became competent enough to believe we had a chance. Over time we began to enjoy what we were doing and fall in less. Before we knew it we were covering longer distances, our technique improved and our stamina grew. We paddled through snow, ice, wind and rain and even bought our own boat! 

Preparation for the race has now taken over my own and Steve’s life, as well as our partners who have been a great support. They have to travel with us, feed us while we sit in the boat and listen to us go on and on and on! It’s been a grueling but fulfilling experience - so far. 

The Race.

This takes place over Easter Weekend. As the title suggests, it starts in Devizes (where I live) and finishes opposite the houses of Parliament. The course is 125 miles in total and, as we are entering the Senior Doubles, we have to complete it in one go and in under 30 hours, paddling through the night. The first 55 miles take place on the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs into the Thames at Reading. Over the course there are a total of 77 portages. This is where we get out and run with boat as there is a lock in the way. We are aiming to do the race in around 24 hours, although conditions on the day will play a big part. Last year about a third of competitors pulled out along the way, but we are determined to finish!

Why Youth Action Wiltshire?

I became aware of Y.A.W through a member of my tutor group last year. She works as a volunteer for them and told me about the work they do in helping young people who often have to get over great difficulties in their personal lives. I was particularly interested in the work they undertake with Young Carers. These are children who have to look after family members (often parents) who are suffering with an illness. Y.A.W work to provide support and opportunities for young people in these situations. They estimate that there are around 2000 young carers in Wiltshire. I believe the work they are doing is crucial and needs supporting.
