Story
I'm raising funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) by riding my 1978 Classic Harley Davidson FLH from the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire to the Arctic Circle, and then back again!
I'm making the journey in May and June 2013 to raise money for the MNDA after my wife, Jan, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2006. I'll be traveling through 9 countries over 23 days, and a distance of some 4,800 miles. My goal is to reach Nordkapp in Norway, a 1000ft cliff rising above the Arctic Ocean, and the most northerly point in mainland Europe, on 21 May to see the midnight sun and think of Jan.
Jan was diagnosed with MND, a progressive disease that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, in 2006. Since her diagnosis, she has lost all of the use in her arms and now also has to limit the distances she can walk.
A message from Pete's wife, Jan Tyler:
“I was previously a really active person and played hockey regularly. My diagnosis of MND was a real shock and it’s obviously changed my life totally. I had to give up work fairly soon after being diagnosed and gradually had to stop doing the things I used to love, like the hockey, cycling and walking our two dogs, Bonnie and Rosie, in the beautiful Forest of Dean. You really do use your arms for everything in life. The MNDA has been really supportive of us in many ways, from giving us practical help and equipment, to providing emotional support and helping us deal with the effects MND has on us both”.
“I’m really pleased Pete has been able to join together his love of classic motorcycles with raising money for the MNDA. I’ll miss him while he’s away but I’ve got family, carers and friends coming to help look after me so I’m sure it will be fine. I just hope he gets lots of sponsors”
