It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

“Run to the Beat” Half Marathon in support of Pancreatic Cancer UK

in memory of Ian Freedman

On the 25 September, I ran the 13 miles/21k of a Half Marathon to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer research and in memory of a wonderful man, Ian Freedman, who had this disease. There are a few words below about Ian and an introduction to the work of Pancreatric Cancer UK.

This is my second year of running, having got started to support a fellow school parent who had also lost a husband to cancer. It has been a revelation, how simply by challenging oneself to run regularly, its possible to feel so much better.

Having done two 10k races last year, attempting the half-marathon seemed the thing to do. It was a great privilege to run on the day for Ian and his family who were kind enough to come and support. I also got the benefit of running with 17,000 others through some of the prettier parts of Greenwich.and even managed a respectable time - though not as respectable as another Pancreatic Cancer UK runner who shouted "snap" as he passed by at speed!

If you are able to contribute, thank you so much for your support.

Details of how to donate are attached overleaf.

With best wishes

Peter

Run to the Beat Half Marathon

Ian Freedman

Ian was a gentle and modest man who was much loved by his family and friends. We remember Ian for his sense of humour, charm, and his love of people, nature, particularly birdwatching, and of the Arsenal!

Ian was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer one week before his 65 birthday and planned retirement. Sadly he died less than six months later. He will be much missed by everyone.

The cause

Pancreatic Cancer is the 10 most common cancer in the UK, but is the 4 most common in America. It is very difficult to detect and it is very hard to cure. So research into both detection and prevention is crucial.

Pancreatic Cancer UK is the only charity working to fight pancreatic cancer on all fronts - through funding research, providing support and information to patients and their families and by campaigning to raise awareness of the disease and the need to improve survival rates. Pancreatic Cancer UK is currently funding several different research projects which are looking at improving treatment options and developing easier ways to diagnose the disease. Pancreatic Cancer UK is committed to increasing the focus on pancreatic cancer research in the UK. Over recent years we have supported innovative research on early detection and diagnosis and into more effective treatments and sought to attract new talent into pancreatic cancer research.

Donating

Any donations you may wish to give will be most welcome. The easiest way is to use this page. If a UK taxpayer, you can take advantage of the Government’s Gift Aid scheme, whereby the taxman will add 25% to the value of your donation – which is automatically catered for by Just Giving. But if you would prefer to donate by cheque, then please make this payable to Pancreatic Cancer UK & send this to me. Gift Aid can still be claimed if included on my official sponsorship form. I will then add the total of cheques received at the bottom of this page.

The course

The Run to the Beat Half Marathon is a circular course starting and finishing at the O2 centre, running through Greenwich and Greenwich Park on the way. Live Bands will apparantly be playing on the route, which will add atmosphere, and I’m sure help us struggling runners !
