Imagine being told your toddler you thought was healthy, but perhaps slow to progress, in fact had a rare and devastating disability that would leave them needing lifelong 24/7 care. Rett syndrome changes lives irrevocably. With your support Rett UK is there from the beginning. #ToKnowHerIsToLoveHer

Story

Hello, and thank you for visiting my Just Giving page!!

This coming summer I am aiming to ride over 3500 miles on a bicycle from San Francisco to New York, starting on the 1st of August 2010 and am hoping to raise £2000 to be split between two charities; Help for Heroes and the Rett Syndrome Association UK. I am self funding the entire trip so every penny I raise can go to the two causes.

Rett Syndrome is a rare and severe neurological disorder. While each child is affected differently it leaves children like my beautiful 4 year old god daughter Ella profoundly disabled.

The child will develop normally until around 12 months then development halts, meaning that 50% will never walk, talk and need 24 hour care. Ella can barely walk, she cannot feed, speak or even dress herself and can be inconsolable with her frustration at not being able to communicate; she needs high levels of care.

The Rett Association is a national charity working to make a difference for people living with Rett Syndrome, their families and carers. They provide a Family Support Service and respite care, telephone support seven days a week, provide training for local healthcare professionals and most importantly help to fund and promote research into this potentially curable disorder.

I am hoping to raise not only funding but also awareness for these two great charities, especially the Rett Association which is relatively unknown, despite the statistic that a child is born every 5 hours with the condition.

So please dig deep and give whatever you can to support this cause
