Here we are again! I've signed up to do Prostate Cancer UK's annual Football to Amsterdam cycle challenge one more time. I've done it for the last four years so, is it a challenge for me any more? Well, yes it is. Firstly, cycling the 150 miles to Amsterdam is not easy but perhaps, the real issues for me have been my health. The first year I did it was just 12 months after I had survived a heart attack. A couple of years ago, I completed the ride following a serious neck injury which could have crippled me at any time. This year I completed the ride with an injury to my knee which caused me to be in constant pain - I am still awaiting surgery on the knee. Who knows what 2019 will bring.

I am doing this ride again to raise awareness of prostate cancer - a killer disease which is not talked about by men and to raise funds to fight the disease.

The statistics about prostate cancer are terrifying. It affects 1 man in every 8 (1 man in every 4, if black) and in this country alone kills 1 man every 45 minutes. It is now more common in men that breast cancer is in women. Prostate Cancer affects women too because it affects the men in their lives.

The disease can be treated if caught early enough so, men, especially if you are over 50, go to your doctor for a check-up. It takes about one minute. It is either a simple blood test or a pain free digital rectal examination. That one minute could save your life.
