Hi,

What?, me?, excercise????  Well you probably know that generally when I do excercise, I ask you to sponsor me for the effort involved!

This time, I am rowing more than 80 miles, over two days, 12 hours a day (at least...), from Radley, near Oxford to the LEH & Hampton Boathouse in Sunbury. Gulp!

I am taking part in the Hampton & LEH Sponsored row, joining the senior squads and some fellow parents.  The parent's boats will be rowed by, in the main, complete novices, such as myself, who up until two weeks ago had never sat in a rowing boat.  It is a daunting task, however, training is underway and by the weekend of Sept 22/23 we will hopefully be forming boats of 8 parents who can attempt to row with some semblance of rhythm for the next 80 miles.  The whole weekend is a mammoth team effort involving not just the rowers but Lock teams, Catering teams, the school's rowing coaches and other organisers, all organised by the volunteers from parents boat club association. My wife Alison will be involved all weekend as well as one of the volunteers.

Many of you will know that my youngest daughter, Becky, was seriously ill a couple of years ago and we could not envisage her doing any sport at all. But last year she joined the LEH rowing club and she has fallen in love with the sport and has gone from strength to strength helping her recovery no-end.  Because of the dedication of the coaches I was inspired to get involved beyond standing on the riverbank.

This will undoubtedly be a tough two days, so I ask you to dig deep and hand over your cash to help me through the pain of the weekend!

As a team, we are aiming to raise enough to pay for a care nurse for an entire year for our local charity "Shooting Star Chase" which provides invaluable hospice care for babies and children with life-limiting conditions.  More information about their incredible work can be seen here: www.shootingstarchase.org.uk
