5.4 million children across the world are currently trapped in orphanages – even though 80% of them have family they could live with if they had the right support. Orphanages harm children, depriving them of love and exposing them to abuse. Your support helps us get children to back to family.

Story

This is truly a monumental event for young people and I need your support.

My plan was a round the world trip to raise money for a children’s charity, round the world in 70 days, in 70 different ways and just to make it more fun, in 70’s fancy dress.

As often is the case, life throws obstacles in your way and the recession certainly has done that to me, so I have adjusted my goal of round the world in 70 days (it's just too expensive!), but all else stands. And for fun, I'm going to open it up to others who'd like to join me and make it a relay.  My first leg of the tour is being completed (I hope) in a mates old wooden boat, which I'm relying upon to transport me to France on 28th May 2010, the following week I will be cycling from St Malo to La Rochelle, France.  The cycle ride is 262 miles and I have two days to do this, before I must return to Blighty to move house the following day.

So there's plenty of ways to contribute, join me on an adventure, do a leg of the tour yourself, suggest a challenge, but most importantly donate some money.

I’ve selected Hope and Homes for children as the charity I'd like to help and every penny of the money I rasie will be donated.

As parents, aunts and uncles or grand parents you always want the best for the children closest to you, you want them to have the best care when they’re ill, their education to be first rate and be sound in the knowledge that they’ll never go to bed hungry.  None of us can stop being genuinely affected by stories and images of children whose lives are devastated through illness, natural disaster or conflict.

But achieving even these most basic needs is never easy, changing the living conditions of deprived children and caring for them when they are ill is expensive and it takes a whole load of dedication from people who truly care. The journey to make a lasting change is a daunting task and logistically challenging, but it is one that the charity I support have successfully undertaken, and they are making a very real difference to children’s lives.

This is an opportunity for you or the organisation you work or belong to, to help me make a difference to children who are devastated through illness, natural disaster or conflict. The charity I’m supporting have witnessed first-hand how money donated changes young lives for the better. Your involvement with this fundraiser is vital. The charities need your donation or your time to help me reach this overall target. This will mean planning events, organising sponsorship, making contacts around the world. This is a significant commitment, however, when we remember why we are doing this, we know that in the long run, all the time and energy will be worth it for the children we help.
