What am I doing?
As most of you will know, I am trekking to Everest Base Camp in April 2010. Given that I don't like heights or the cold, and I am not that keen on trekking either, this is likely to be quite a test for me.
I thought I would use this opportunity to raise some money from you all for a cause which I think is very worthwhile.
Why am I doing it?
I am sure many of you will have seen the recent programmes on Channel 4 Dispatches about "Saving Africa's Witch Children".
It focussed on the work being done by Stepping Stones to highlight the abandonment, torture and killings of children stigmatised as 'witches' in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria.
Stepping Stones Nigeria is deeply committed to defending and upholding the basic rights of every child and empowering them to achieve their absolute potential. Working in partnership with local community organisations, they deliver education, refuge, heathcare and hope for a brighter future to vulnerable and disadvantaged children such as street children and orphans. Through advocacy and research they passionately campaign at a local, national and international level to put a stop to the abuse of innocent children.
As a cutting-edge child rights charity, their work focuses on some of the most challenging issues that children face today such as:
- - Lack of access to good quality education and resources
- - Stigmatisation, abandonment and killings of so-called child 'witches'
