Last year for a bit of fun, I did the London-Brighton night ride and many of you generously supported me through donations to charity – for which a great many thanks. This year I am raising money for Seeing is Believing - my employer's official charitable partner and I'm cycling further and harder: 2 laps of Jersey (down and up 34 bays in all, 102 miles and over 8000 feet vertically upwards). Pleased to say I'm not as fat as I was before I started training but this will nevertheless be a sweaty, wheezy, and determined struggle between Newton's laws and my belly.
Why? Because there are 1.4 million blind children in the world, 1 million of whom live in Asia and 300,000 in Africa. Less than 10% of blind children attend school and poor eye sight, let alone blindness, has a huge impact on a child’s learning and development. This includes the inability to read a chalkboard or book at school. About 4 in 10 of the causes of childhood blindness are preventable or treatable.
The event is being organised by my employer - Standard Chartered Bank – and money raised will support the bank’s official charity Seeing is Believing. Standard Chartered has operations in parts of the world most afflicted by the above problems..
The bank will match all money raised £1 for £1 and if you’re a UK taxpayer claiming gift aid, it means your £1 donation could raise a total £2.20 for a great cause.
Your support is much appreciated.
