I have for many years wanted to run the London Marathon, and this year I have been lucky enough to have received a place from The Great Ormond Street Hospital.  This charity is particularly special to me since my cousin Millie was first admitted there eight years ago.

Millie has a rare and terminal heart and lung condition, Pulmonary Hypertension.  She was first admitted to hospital when she was just 3 weeks old, and since then she has had to return to have open-heart surgery, been on life support, and has had to be resuscitated on more than one occasion.  Millie has had 15 operations in 8 years and for both Millie and her family provide constant knowledge and support.  Quite simply without Great Ormond Street there would be no Millie, but thanks to their work she is a lively, fun loving eight year old who continues to fight her condition.  

Great has offered specialist care, and support for Millie and her family as well as thousands of other children with life threatening illnesses, but continues to rely on charitable donations to ensure it remains the world-class institution it is today. 

Support from fund raising events such as this helps them to buy vital equipment, fund pioneering research and most importantly rebuild and refurbish some of the hospital site.  This redevelopment will allow them to replace inconvenient, cramped and outdated wards with new facilities where parents can sleep alongside their child and will mean that children have more space in which to get well.

So, I have the motivation, raising money for a very worthwhile charity and fulfilling an ambition to take part in the London Marathon, now it’s down to some hard training…..
