FADE IN:
INT: The Greenhouse - Leeds
David Greenbrown: Phil, we're going to run a marathon and raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Phil Hirst Green: Dave, I would rather chop my hands off with a rusty saw.
FADE OUT:
And that's how it started, August 2012. I was approached by the company director, David Greenbrown, and asked if I wished to train to run 26 miles for the New York Marathon. My immediate reaction was how on earth can someone who hasn't run more than 1 mile since he was 11, train to run 26 miles before November 2013? Dave's answer was simple, dedication, well being, pride, achievement and an amibtion to help others.
I wish the training was as simple as Dave's answer. I downloaded the Runkeeper app, went and bought an armband and began running. My first run of 3.39 miles on August 7th is clocked as 41:44. I pulled a calf muscle first time out and called Dave to announce my marathon retirement.
Well, 10 months on, 5 more pulled muscles later, a lot of blood, sweat and tears, wind and rain and I'm still training. The furthest I've run so far is 12.22 miles which clocked in at 2h 08m 03s. Still a long way to go, but I feel that with a little bit of confidence, and the feel good factor you guys can give me by donating to such a great cause, I can complete the training and nail the New York Marathon.
So please, any donations are most welcome. Help a 32 year old kebab munching, former ale king get over the finishing line.
