Bupa Great Yorkshire Run 2009 · 6 September 2009 ·

Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma. We make it possible to live longer and better lives with myeloma. Through research and treatments, we find new ways to a cure. Together, we are the cure.

Story

Hello everyone! My name is Phil Thompson. On Sunday 6th September 2009, I will be participating in The Great Yorkshire Run through the city of Sheffield. Although not a full or half marathon, this particular run is 10,000 metres or 6.25 miles.

The charity i have decided to run for is MYELOMA UK. This particular charity has only recently become special to me as i lost my dad to Mutiple Myeloma on the 19th of June this year. Although some people can live for years with Myeloma, my dad was one of the unlucky ones and only lasted 4 weeks. I am trying to raise some monies for this charity to aid other people and families that have been affected by Myeloma. Also the money raised will go towards Myloma research.

Let me tell you a little bit about Myeloma.

Myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer, but only makes up 1% of all cancers' in the world today. What Myloma does, once you have it that is, is attack the bodies plasma cells. Plasma cells are what the bodies' immune system are made up of, to fight infection and disease. Once it has disabled your plasma cells, Myloma attacks the bodies' vital organs, more often than not, one of the first signs that you could have Myeloma is Renal Disease, or what is more commonly known as kidney failure. Myeloma also attacks the bone marrow at the same time as the vital organs.

Not only am i trying to raise money for this charity, but just raise awareness of this condition. In a survey of 1000 people in 2008, 97% of people did not even know what Myeloma was. If you are interested in learning more about Myeloma the internet website is: myeloma.org.uk

I am not asking for much in sponsor, just as much as each person can afford to give. all sponsors, no matter how big or small will be gratefully accepted. If you want to sponsor me per kilometer, or to do it in a certain time you are more than welcome. My best time for the 10,000 meters at present prior to training is 1hr and 30 minutes. As a stipulation in the requirements for running, i have to raise funds in excess of £450 before i will be able to run. If you are in any doubt as to weather or not i will have actually completed the affornamed run i will be more than happy to send my medal and certificate down to the shop for display for you all to see.

thankyou very much for taking the time to read this information. And thankyou to anyone who chooses to sponsor me.
