Hei-hei

Welcome, friends!

Exploitation of the tar sands in Canada has exploded in recent years, largely in response to increased prices through peak oil. This deadly development is set to double by 2030.

A Greenpeace statement on the tar sands:

"The Tar Sands of Northern Alberta, Canada - also called oil sands are one of the largest remaining deposits of oil in the world.

Developing the tar sands has created the biggest industrial development project, the biggest capital investment project and the biggest energy project in the world. It has also created a literal hell on earth.

Areas of wilderness the size of small countries are chewed up and replaced by a landscape of toxic lakes, open pit mines, refineries and pipe lines.

The tar sands are what unrestrained fossil fuel use and unchecked greenhouse gas emissions look like. They are pushing us toward runaway climate change"

This doesn't even take into consideration the noxious effects this dirty 'gold rush' is having on local first nations peoples, such as the Beaver Lake Cree. Communities are finding their health, traditions and general wellbeing under attack from the industrial onslaught.

In July of this year, 8 student activists including myself went to stay with and learn from the Beaver Lake Cree. It marked the start of a year long (and beyond!) commitment to campaign on the tar sands here in the U.K. We are building links of international solidarity. In November, a group of youths from the Beaver Lake Cree will be coming to stay with us here to directly communicate their experiences and contribute to the struggle for a tar sands free future. We need support for this to happen.

Please donate what you can to make this exchange as successful as it can possibly be!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND SOLIDARITY x
