Story

Thank you for looking at my page

Back in 2005 I had one of those life changing experiences, which
began with my usual motorbike commute to work and ended with me being
scraped of the road and carried off to hospital by the air ambulance. I
don’t remember too much of the accident, but it got me thinking about the
amazing work the air ambulance does and how I (and you) could help them.

Richard Hammond "The Hamster" (from Top Gear) raised over £190,000 for the
Yorkshire air ambulance last year, after he crashed a rocket car. Well
anyone who knows me knows my cars never work long enough make it to the pub,
let alone set any speeds records, so my thinking turned to the London
Marathon (22 April 2007).
Up until few weeks ago I didn’t really comprehend how far 26.2 miles was.
You try it; reset the trip in your car, my jaw dropped when I did.

Well its all for a good cause;
The Air Ambulance has the ability to access remote parts of Essex quickly,
bringing paramedics and sophisticated life-saving equipment to a patient
within the first few vital minutes of an emergency. It is not affected by
the ever-increasing traffic and is never more than eight minutes flying time
from any one of the major hospitals.
The Essex Air Ambulance Trust needs in excess of £105,000 each month to keep
the helicopter fully operational. The bottom line is, no money, no Air
Ambulance!
The Essex Air Ambulance Trust is a charity and is not funded by either the
NHS or Government.
The total costs for this valuable life-saving service has to be found from
charitable donations from the general public. So please, please help me to
help them to help you.

My training has begun. I have started pounding the streets and the gym
(its more of a trot really, slowly slowly catchy monkey)
I have never really thought about the training that goes into the Marathon
and I have been quick to realise that the darkest, rainiest months come
before April - so far high winds and drizzle have been a part of the
"endurance process" that seems to be training!

I will keep you updated with how it is going!
The official pace keeping vehicle (Kate’s bike) is as we speak under going a
service (I’ve pumped the tyres up and everything) it’s important to have all
the right gear to cope with the changing conditions and weather, so I
brought some new socks too.

If you see me out and about training give me toot and a wave to help me on
my way.

Many thanks

Peter also know as Peroxide

Feb Update:

I’ve been practicing running in the suit I did 1 hour in the gym and it was like running in a sleeping bag, really hot, but I’ve been drinking lots of water so it’s not going to kill me (I don’t think so). I went a bit to far to soon in new trainers *durr* so I’ve been suffering a bit, which means I have gone from slightly in front of my training plan to slightly behind.

The run last Sunday was in a wet and slippy one it was also my first run outside in the orange suit, despite the best efforts of the traffic trying to get me by having a accident right next to me we got round all ok, and I’m feeling fine today, so that’s got to be good.

I had a interview for the paper today I’m not sure when that will be out, but I went down to the air field to have some photo’s taken.

 March update:

Well I should be up to 17 miles now and I'm err not. I've had a bit of knee problem, it's getting better but I've been to see a Physiotherapist. I kept thinking I’m paying for this, as a small puddle of tearas formed (I kid you not)
So it was just a gentle trot to the gym, stretches and jog home. I forgot my jelly babies so the last half mile was a stinker.

I had another massage on Saturday just half an hour, (it’s enough trust me)

The old right knee was a bit stiff, but free up on the way round, just before the left one decided to go on strike and Sunday’s run turned in to a hobble. Not to worry a bit of ice and some stretches and were not too bad today.

I was in Budapest for a weekend jolly, but the hotel had a pool and gym so I was able  to do a bit.

I was also in the paper last week I’m trying to get it scanned in.

I went in to SGR Colchester Radio for an interview about the Brentwood Half Marathon and the EAA and It was played in the news hour on the 25th to back up the half marathon on SGR and Essex FM (I’m trying to get copy for you)

The Brentwood half Marathon was on the 25th,  I had a knee problem at the end so I had to hobble the last mile or so, it was the 1st big run in the full costume. I finished in 2h 18mins. A big thank you to the lady in the 4x4 and the lady walking up the hill for the money they gave me, it's was a lovely surprise and has been added to the grand total.

Just one more long run to go, before the taper for the big day

I've made a little video too, it's got a few cars in as I don’t have much running footage at the moment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tL54TgXcOPw

 April update:

Good & bad news this month, we managed to find out that my knee problem was down to something called ITB or runners knee, the bad news is I‘ve had some very painful physo, we me gritting my teeth, screwing up my face and muttering I hate you, I hate you “are you OK?” “oh fine you carry on, *mutter mutter*"

I was also was determined to do a long run, so with a backpack full of goodies, drinks and a map off the internet we headed out, too what can only be described as the worse run of my life, see the problem is the internet can tell you how far to go, but not how hilly or windy it will be.

After I chucked all my toys out of the pram, I sat down on a grassy bank to loosen my laces ahead of another huge hill only to get stung by a load of stinging nettles..…

But we made it, and so started our taper.

The weather got nicer and I’ve enjoyed the running again

We did a little run on Sunday my last one in the suit 24 deg, rather warm, but it was good fun, with people waving and shouting good luck.

That brings the marathon that is training, all but to an end.

It’s lots of stretches and some more trips to Herman Goring school of physo (sorry Alan).

Thank you very very much to every one who has, helped, given me thing, offered advice, lent books, tooted generally supported and most importantly help me raise some much needed funds for the Essex Air Ambulance, I would love to break that £1000 so dig deep or maybe forward this on to someone.

Thanks again guys.

Come fly with me on the 22nd
