Hi!

If you've reached this page, that means you're probably holding a strange looking pound coin in your hand. That pound coin came from the 4th Plinth in Trafalgar Square!

You'll probably have heard about the One&Other project, 100 days of lucky individuals taking an hour atop the plinth to do, well, whatever they feel like.

On the 27th July, I was lucky enough to get an hour up on the plinth and I decided to use it to....................give money away! Every minute, I gave away a £1 coin (just like the one in your hand) to a passer by, in the hope that they'd be interested enough to see the web address engraved upon it and visit this page. Please think about whether you'd like to give a pound away too, perhaps to AMREF using this page, who'll be receiving the donations made here?

Don't forget to pass your special pound on to someone else too! Spend it, give it in change, whatever but make sure you move it on to allow someone else the chance to wonder why their £1 has a web address stuck to it!

Here's link to the video of me on the plinth:

Thanks,

Matt

www.amref.org

AMREF is an international African organisation headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.

AMREF's vision is Better Health for Africa.

AMREF’s mission is to ensure that every African can enjoy the right to good health by helping to create vibrant networks of informed communities that work with empowered health care providers in strong health systems.

AMREF has 50 years’ experience in health development. In 1957, three surgeons founded the Flying Doctors Service of East Africa, laying the foundation for what is now one of the continent’s leading health development and research organisations. Today, AMREF implements its projects through country programmes in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and South Africa. Training and consulting support are provided to an additional 30 African countries.

Knowledge is a core product of AMREF’s activities. AMREF implements projects to learn, and shares this evidence-based knowledge with others to advocate for changes in health policy and practice. Based on the belief that health is a basic human right, AMREF seeks to empower communities to take control of their health and to establish a vibrant and participatory health care system made up of communities, health workers and governments.

When you donate to AMREF you make a difference in the lives of people in Africa. Below are just some examples of how far your donation can go. No donation is too small or too large. Whatever you are able to donate will make a difference.

  • $2,000 could cover the cost of building materials with the labour provided by the community for one major new well for a community of 500 people.

  • $1,500 could pay for a team of urban specialist doctors to fly to a remote hospital in East Africa. During the visit they will treat over 40 patients and undertake at least 10 complicated operations as they train the local health workers and doctors to undertake some of these tasks in the future.

  • $600 could pay for a toilet/washroom block in Kibera- a Nairobi slum.

  • $200 could pay for drip irrigation for two family's fields in a drought prone area.

  • $150 could help rehabilitate one local village well.

  • $120 could provide an AIDS orphan's gaurdian with a loan to help start a family business.

  • $100 Could pay for anti malaria bed nets for 12 families.

  • $50 Could vaccinate 40 children against polio.

  • $25 Could fund an AMREF water stall to supply clean drinking water to 600 people.

  • $ 5 Could treat a patient with life threatening malaria.
