Bonjour à tous ! (ENGLISH VERSION BELOW THIS!!)

En août prochain, je ferai partie d'une équipe de 15 personnes de chez Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) qui entreprendra, au cours d’un trek épuisant, l’ascension du Kilimandjaro, le plus haut sommet du continent africain situé en Tanzanie. Cette action s’inscrit dans le cadre du soutien qu’apporte le groupe C&W à sa fondation "Schools Around the World" (SATW). C’est l’occasion pour chaque participant de promouvoir et collecter des fonds pour l’association caritative SATW et de renforcer les liens qui les unissent à une des écoles du programme et d'encourager les initiatives dans chacun de leur pays respectif.

L’expédition, programmée début d'août, devrait s’échelonner sur une dizaine de jours et empruntera la fameuse route des « Lemosho Glades » qui permettra de s’acclimater progressivement avant d’atteindre le sommet, culminant à 5.895 m d’altitude. http://kilimanjaro.satwdonate.org/ 

L’ascension sera dirigée par l’alpiniste britannique Rhys Jones qui a atteint le sommet de l'Everest à 20 ans et détient ainsi le record du monde du plus jeune alpiniste à avoir réussi l’exploit de conquérir les sommets les plus hauts des sept continents. L’expédition sera codirigée par Harry Farthing de chez C&W qui était accompagné par Rhys Jones lors de son ascension du Mont Everest en 2006, qu’il avait entreprise afin de faire connaitre la fondation SATW au niveau international.

La fondation SATW est une association caritative déclarée qui, en s'associant avec des écoles situées dans les pays où le groupe C&W est implanté, tend à faire bénéficier de jeunes gens (11-25 ans) d’opportunités auxquelles ils n’auraient pas accès autrement pour des motifs familiaux ou financiers, d’améliorer leur accès à l'éducation, de les aider à nourrir leurs aspirations et renforcer ainsi leurs capacités de développement personnel. Ainsi, divers événements, visites culturelles et expériences professionnelles ont été organisés pour ces jeunes par la fondation. Quant à moi – j’ai hâte de retourner en Afrique !

Pour ceux qui ne me connaissent pas, voici un petit résumé de mes expériences de voyage en Afrique.

Après l'université, j'ai voyagé en Afrique de l’Est et Australe et notamment dans les pays suivants : au Kenya (voyage en voiture au lac Turkana où j’ai du traverser une zone de brigands), en Tanzanie (via le Tanzar Express, et souvenir de brochettes douteuses (!) à Dar E Salam), au Malawi (nombre scandaleux de verres de rhum avalés (!), plongée, ascension du mont Mulanje), en Zambie (pas grand-chose à dire, Lusaka n'était pas génial), au Zimbabwe (safari à pied, saut à l’élastique à 111 mètres au dessus de la Zambèze) et à Zanzibar. En 2000, j'ai passé de bonnes vacances en tentant l'ascension du Kilimandjaro via « la Route du Whisky », mais j’ai du rebrousser chemin alors que j’étais presque arrivé au sommet en raison du mauvais temps. J’ai alors fait du stop depuis Moshi jusqu’à Mombassa au Kenya et puis direction Zanzibar pour la seconde fois. Entre 2003 et 2005, j'ai vécu à Kampala au bord du lac Victoria en Ouganda, et officiais en tant que Directeur chez Knight Frank. Je dirigeais une formidable équipe et profitais pleinement des défis et des changements de la ville ! Les week-ends étaient fantastiques également – visites des parcs nationaux et week-ends passés à découvrir l’intérieur des terres, en général avec mon fidèle chauffeur Jackson et quelques amis. En 2006, je suis retourné en Afrique pour l’ascension du volcan en activité « Nyiragongo» à Goma en République Démocratique du Congo. Depuis, j'ai davantage pratiqué le VTT au travers de récents voyages dans le Jura en France, à Huaraz au Pérou à environ 3.500 à 4.700 m d’altitude, et dans le parc national Chapada à Diamantina au Brésil.

J’ai passé des moments fantastiques à voyager en Afrique et vécu de magnifiques expériences qui m’ont permis d’acquérir une bonne connaissance de l’Afrique (sauf pour le paludisme que j'ai eu à deux reprises !).

Comme je travaille pour le bureau français de C&W, à Paris, je représenterai la FRANCE. J’ai d’ores et déjà investi dans des t-shirts de football en polyester plutôt moches qui, je l'espère, seront moins serrés une fois que j’aurais perdu quelques kilos après des mois de préparation et d’entrainement physique !

Le bureau parisien de C&W accueillera l'école TRACKS de Bradford du 19 au 22 juillet 2010. Les élèves seront présentés à certains de nos clients afin de leur donner un aperçu du monde de l’entreprise. Egalement de chouettes activités seront programmées telles que, bien sûr, l’ascension de la Tour Eiffel, une croisière sur la Seine et une visite du musée d'Orsay pour une « introduction au mouvement impressionniste ». Par ailleurs, nous sommes en train de finaliser notre choix d'une école à « adopter », et j'espère être en mesure de vous en reparler bientôt !

In August this year, I am part of a 15 strong team from Cushman & Wakefield which will set out on a gruelling trek to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest point in to promote and collect for our charity "Schools Around the World". (SATW)

The SATW Kilimanjaro trek is an opportunity for the individual participants to raise awareness and funds for SATW and to further develop relationships with their adopted schools and to progress SATW initiatives within each of their own countries. The SATW Kilimanjaro trek is expected to take approximately 10 days in early August and will take what is known as the ‘Lemosho Glades Route’ which gives a good progressive acclimatisation to the summit height of 5,895 m / 19,340 ft. The trek will be be led by British climber, Rhys Jones who reached the summit of Mount Everest on his 20th Birthday and claimed a World record as the youngest ‘Seven Summiteer’ (ie summiting the seven highest continental peaks). The trip will be co-led by C&W's own Harry Farthing, who was accompanied by Rhys on his Everest climb in 2006 which he undertook to launch SATW at an international level. http://kilimanjaro.satwdonate.org/

Schools Around the World is a registered charity which exists to increase the aspirations of young people worldwide. By partnering with schools wherever C&W operates around the world, SATW aims to help widen the horizons of young people (11-25 year olds) whose opportunities are limited by their domestic, social or financial circumstances. SATW aims to give these young people opportunities for improved education, help nurture their aspirations and promote their personal growth. As for me - I cannot wait to get back to !!

For those who do not know me, here's a little background. After University I travelled through eastern Africa - Kenya ( trip to Lake Turkana overland through bandit country), Tanzania ( Tanzar Express, dodgy kebabs in Dar E Salam), Malawi ( outrageous amounts of Rum, snorkelling , climbing Mt Mulanje) Zambia ( not alot to say, Lusaka was not great) Zimbabwe ( walking safaris, 111 metre bungi over the Zambezi) Zanzibar. Then in 2000 I had a good trip with an attempted Kilimanjaro ascent via the "whiskey route" but was turned back when nearly there through bad weather. Then I hitchiked down from Kili to Mombassa and visited  for a second time. Between 2003-5 I lived in Kampala, Uganda as Manager of Knight Frank running a great team and thoroughly enjoying the challenges and changes from the City!! Weekends were awesome too- National Parks and upcountry trips usually with my trusty driver Jackson and some friends. In 2006 was back in Africa, climbing the live volcano in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo "Nyiragongo" but since then I have switched more to mountain biking with recent trips in Jura, France;  Huaraz, Peru between 3,500 - 4,700 metres; and Chapada Diamantina National Park in Brazil. So with lots of great travelling experiences and a huge appreciation of all things African. (except for malaria which I have had twice now)

As I work for C&W in Paris, I will be representing FRANCE, so I have already invested in some rather tacky polyester football t-shirts which I hope will be looser fitting after the next few months training and preparation. Mange tout mange tout. At the C&W Paris offices, we are welcoming the TRACKS school from Bradford (the UK adopted school) from July 19-22nd and will be introducing them to some of our clients to give an insight into the business world, as well as a few fun activities such as, bien sur, climbing the Eiffel Tower, a boat trip on the Seine and visiting the Musee d'Orsay for an "Introduction to the Impressionists" We are also in the process of finalising our own choice of a school to adopt- so I hope to be able to update on this soon!
