Story
I am participating in the Great South Run and raising money for LUPUS UK. I am a lupus patient. Just before my diagnosis two years ago I was training for the Great South Run, at the time I had no idea what was wrong with me and I was so ill I didn’t think I was going to walk properly again let alone run. As it happens I am managing my condition and am training again this year. I’m determined to complete the 10 mile run!
Systemic lupus is a chronic and presently-incurable illness of the immune system, a condition in which the body's defence mechanism begins to attack itself through an excess of antibodies in the blood stream causing inflammation and damage in the joints, muscles and other organs.
Lupus can adversely affect the lives of sufferers and their families, and influence relationships with friends and business colleagues.
LUPUS UK is the only national registered charity supporting people with systemic lupus and discoid lupus and assisting those approaching diagnosis. They presently have over 6000 Members and a number of Regional Groups around the UK who arrange medical talks, publish local newsletters, set up local occasions and organise fundraising events. LUPUS UK also produces an informative national magazine with lupus articles, letters, reports, and photographs, and operates a strong Grant Programme for research purposes and welfare.
