And now, the story
In 1965, the Austrian hills were alive with the Sound of Music. This coming July, the long-awaited sequel will finally unfold, when the Lake District Peaks will be alive with the sounds of harmonious grunting and melodious swearing as a crack unit of TS survivalists attempt the monumental challenge that is… The 24 Peaks Challenge.
The event
The event involves 24 hours of madness, scaling 24 peaks (each one more than 24 hundred feet) including 8 of the 10 highest in England (Scaffell pike, at 978 metres, is the highest in England and is twice the height of Ayers Rock and three times the height of the Eiffel Tower).
A prominent extreme adventure website sums it up: The Lake District 24 Peaks Challenge is a two day challenge over a walking distance of 31 miles which will push your mental and physical strength to the limit.
Our team
Following a rigorous selection process commonly known as “first-come, first-serve” we have painstakingly narrowed down the initial vast list to the following masochistic individuals:
Damian Guly (aka Colonel Von Trapp) – The captain of this troop, his determination and competitive spirit know no bounds - he intends to lead the team up every peak!
Raymond Hurley (aka Maria) – His softly spoken accent belies an inner toughness hewn on Ireland’s toughest terrain as a stand-in goat herder during his university summer holidays
Andrew McDavid (aka Friedrich) – not known for his singing but good at corralling the troops
Christian Cunneen (aka Kurt) – Lured by the promise of a trophy that’s remarkably similar to the one bearing William Webb Ellis’ name (not that he, as a New Zealander, would notice the resemblance)
Kevin Macdonald (aka Brigitta)– Recently completed the London Marathon as a warm up for this event
Rob Cloete (aka Marta) – a veteran of various European distance events, whose lack of hill experience presents a challenge
Johnny Earl (aka Little Gretl) – An able sailor, whose leadership skills on the water should provide valuable guidance and foster teamwork on land
Our cause
Our task is to raise £6,000 for CARE International, which is one of the world’s top three aid agencies, fighting poverty and injustice in over 70 countries around the world and helping 59 million people each year to find routes out of poverty.
Here are a few examples of how your donations can help CARE continue their work:
- £5 could provide a student with a set of textbooks in subjects such as maths, science, economics and history;
- £10 could provide a week's worth of heating and cooking coal for a family in an emergency;
- £15 could provide a secondary school student with a health kit including a first aid box, bandages, antiseptic clean gloves, and other basis health supplies; and
- £20 could provide a family with warm clothes.
Our request
To achieve our goal of raising £6,000, we will employ various tactics including a weekly cup-cake sale (the first is this Monday morning) and an exclusive World Cup Football event.
We look forward to your support, both moral and financial!
