I am doing Ironman (IM) UK this year in aid of Caring For Life (CFL), a Christian charity who for the last 23 years have cared for vulnerable adults in the Leeds area. Over 3,500 people have benefited from the work of CFL during this time and they currently have 200 men and women who they care for. Ironman UK takes place at Bolton on 1st August 2010. Doing an Ironman is no mean feat. Personally, I have never competed in a triathlon at all. The event comprises 3 disciplines: a 2.4m open water swim, followed by a 112mile bike ride and then finishes with a 26.1 marathon run. I reckon it could take me anything from 12-15 hours and there is the added pressure of cut-off times at each stage: 2hrs20mins for the swim; 10hrs:30mins for the bike and then 17hrs for the run. I also have another reason for doing IM UK. My twin brother Ian, needs a kidney transplant and he asked me to donate one of mine. Who could say no to a request like that! I thought I ought to do the Ironman before I undergo such a serious operation, rather than after.
