Story
In early April I am entered to run through 156 miles of the Moroccan Sahara as part of the Marathon des Sables. The race has been described by many as 'the toughest footrace on earth'. The race is run over 6 days in temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, with an average distance on any given day set at a marathon. We are to carry all out kit, including food, stove, sleeping bags and essential survival kit including a venom pump. Water is rationed to make things a little harder still. As you might think it is all rather bonkers.
I am running not only for the ‘experience’ but more importantly for Macmillan. Those who work for Macmillan are tireless in their efforts to alleviate cancer pain. The extensive support that Macmillan were able to give to Kate, my beloved aunt, in the last years of her life, was of the greatest importance in helping her to deal and live with the cancer that eventually got the better of her.
Macmillan aim ‘to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer’. They provide not only practical support but also financial and medical care in an attempt to provide a better care for those dealing with cancer and aiding their on-going fight. Their work helps the individual so while the difference that is made is not evident to the world it is seen by those who care most.
