Story

In February 2008 “The Blister Busters” Mick Russell, Jason Parry, Jenny Hill and Nathan Ide are taking part in an ultra-marathon adventure race called Racing the Planet – Vietnam, to help raise funds for a great cause!  All proceeds will go to DebRA, which is a non-government supported charity working on behalf of people with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), by supporting families living with, and funding vital research into, the condition.

Mick’s 18 month old daughter, Isabella, suffers from EB. The team therefore, thought that a 250km ultra-marathon would be a very appropriate way to not only raise funds and awareness of this condition, but to also ‘walk a mile in Bella’s shoes’. It’ll be interesting to see if they can handle the pain and discomfort from blisters as cheerfully as little Bella does everyday.

So what EXACTLY is Epidermolysis Bullosa?

Epidermolysis bullosa, or EB, is a devastating and often fatal disorder in which the outer layer of skin, the epidermis, fails to stick properly to the underlying layer of skin, and blisters or peels off at the slightest knock or rub. Epidermolysis bullosa literally means ‘blistering breakdown of skin’, and this happens because the skin lacks one type of protein that normally helps to hold the two layers together.

Racing the Planet Overview

RTP Vietnam is a self-supported footrace across 250 kilometres (150 miles) of North-western . The race consists of six stages, lasting 6 days, with distances with distances ranging from 20 - 80 kilometers (10 -50 miles) per stage. Competitors are required to be fully self-supported throughout the event and must carry all their own food, gear including a one man tent and clothing which they will need to complete the 250 kilometre course.

RTP – will take place from the 18th to the 23rd of February 2008 in the remote mountains of northwest Vietnam .

Terrain - Three-quarters of the landscape is mountainous and hilly, especially in the north and northwest. The country's highest elevation is Mount Fansipan (3,143 meters) in the northwest. Thus, competitors can expect mountains, rice fields, rivers, lakes and rainforest.

Weather: The weather in northwest Vietnam is relatively mild in late November with average low temperatures of about 52F (11C) and average high temperatures of about 63F (17C). November is also the beginning of the dry season in northwest with low precipitation expected. Northwest Vietnam does contain Vietnam's highest mountain and thus competitors can expect cooler weather.
