I'm taking part in the yoga-thon event to support a worthy charity and introduce a few more people to the benefits of yoga practice.  My target is to raise £108 and complete all 108 salutations with good technique and great intention. 

What is yoga?  I guess it depends who you ask but I'd say it's an approach to life based on ancient science.  Today most people practice physical postures (asana) for body strength and health.  The physical postures are collectively known as Hatha yoga.  Hatha is also translated as ha meaning 'sun' and tha meaning 'moon'.

What is a sun salutation?  It is one of the better known yoga sequences.  It consists of eight dynamic postures linked by breath.  As with many asanas, regular practice builds body strength, co-ordination and balance.  It also encourages us to breathe better and to quieten the mind which is great for releasing stress and tension.  On another level practicing the sequence is a way to celebrate the sun and its characteristics, such as light and warmth, which after all sustains life.  The practice can also represent embodiment of these characteristics in ourselves and others.

Why 108?  The significance of 108 is open to interpretation but has long been revered in numerology associated with Hinduism and yoga.
