Update 2

Finally managed to complete one! I did the Tatton park Triathlon last Sunday. The swim was in a lake- so not as challenging as the sea, but there was a rather large amount of very thick pond weed that did make sections much harder and unpleasant. The cycle was mostly flat and enjoyable, and the run as expected was difficult, made harder by a pulled calf muscle. But I got round!! Not rushing to do another, I need to work on my running this winter I think.

UPDATE

Gutted!! Just got home fromLlandudno and so dissapointed. The weather was so bad that the swim was cancelled due to safety issues, driving rain and very very windy.

The event was then turned into a duathlon (run, cycle , run) which in effect meant doubling the run distance - no good for me with my dodgy achilles, but even without that issue I reckon we would have still pulled out as in our eyes it was not safe to try and do the Orme in the incredibly gusty winds and rain. Talking to people and reading back the race reports we made the right decision, a lot of people pulled out before or did not finish.( Didn't need another broken arm in the family before Italy tomorrow)

So what now? I shall go in search of another challenging tri and hope you don't mind having donated - (I would give it back if I could). So watch this page! and thanks again for your support.

Ps. What's even worse is that I ate loads at the meal out last night (pudding and everything) and then had heaps this morning in anticipation of the race and then I have done nothing to burn it off!

I have entered the Llandudno triathlon next Sunday, I have completed a tri before, but that was ladies only, with a pool swim, a flat bike ride and a run round a sports field. I thought that if I was to do one for charity I ought to make it a bit more of a challenge, so now we have a sea swim, a cycle up and down the Great Orme (twice) and a run along the promenade and up the little Orme.

So why should you sponsor me?

Well, I have spent hours and hours on training, I have learnt front crawl at beginners swimming lessons, have mastered (I hope) clip in pedals on my road bike, have searched out hills to practice on (even in Norfolk), and have persevered at the running.

The Sea Swim is the least of my worries, but it will be cold, there are jelly fish and let’s face it a wet suit is not a good look on someone still going to weight watchers. Next there is the removal of the wet suit, (an art in itself) to reveal an even less flattering, red Lycra, tri suit, which by now will be topped off with a bedraggled hair style.

Then there is the bike ride, that again would normally not be too much of a problem, but there is steep, slow drag up the Great Orme and then a scary, twisty descent. I understand some people come down at 45mph, believe me I will have the brakes on all the time! If we are unlucky there will be a force 10 gale blowing as we round the headland. .

After that the “dreaded run”, I struggle with the concept at the best of times but have you ever tried it after cycling and with a dodgy Achilles – think I may be walking some of it!

So remember I am edging on 50 and I am definitely no athlete!

For those of you linked to the Pituitary Foundation I am now panhypopituitary and on all the usual replacements, inc hydrocortisone (I had Cushing’s 2007- 2x transphenoidal ops, then radiotherapy) which presents its own set of challenges, and that’s why I’m supporting the Pituitary Foundation - they provide invaluable support  and information for people with pituitary disease.

I am also supporting a Crohn's disease charity as my Nephew was diagnosed recently. Please help them if you can, these lesser known charities do such good work and need all the support they can get.

Many thanks

Rachel

Ps Just got my start time-I'm in the second to last wave to leave so my fear of coming last and them closing the course behind me, may just come true!
