Karis Kids is a charity working to set the homeless in families. Working with families in the UK and the Anglican church in Kampala, the charity enables families in the slums to take in orphans who are relatives, providing healthcare, education and basic necessities for the whole family.

I did it! A beautiful day, all the training worked and knowing so many kind people were supporting me was a huge motivation to keep going. Thank you all, and especially my lovely running friends xx

In February I saw the difference Karis Kids makes by supporting families fostering orphans in the slum areas of Kampala, Uganda. Support is given to the whole family for things like medical care, food, soap and clothing contributions. At least four children per family get their primary school fees paid. In Kalerwe, where the sewers flood regularly during the rainy season, just being given a bunk bed means the family can sit on top and be safe when their shack floods. The problem comes now that some of the Karis children are leaving primary and wanting to start secondary school, which is much more costly, averaging £500 per year.

Karis Kids are keen to support some children who have shown themselves to be hardworking and high achieving to further their education, to give them an opportunity to help themselves and their families transform their lives.
I started running in 2008, and was very pleased to complete a 5k Race for Life. Since then I have gradually built up the distances with the support of my lovely running friends, managed 10 miles last year and a half marathon in April. I feel the time could be right to try and train for a marathon, since it is Olympic year, and would love to use this opportunity to raise the fees for a bright young person (or even 2?) to attend secondary school next year. Can you support me with this? It’s going to be a huge challenge to train for this very hilly route, and my friends are only accompanying me on the second half of the Marathon, so I will need lots of motivation to get that far. But it is nothing compared to the challenges the young people we met in Kampala have to face every day.
Thank you for reading this. I am very grateful for your support. Bless you!
Rachel
