Story
As most of you know, I was fortunate enough to visit friends in Burundi and DRC in September 2012 and then fly to Uganda to continue work with the slum project 'Macedonian Children's Outreach Project' in Masese, Jinja.
I am returning with a team of people in February 2013 when I hope to work in the slum area again.
‘According to research, 13% of the estimated 2 million slum dwellers in Uganda have access to toilet facilities, Soweto [Masese 2] only has a handful of pit latrines.’ (P37 New Vision 13 September 2012)
It has been agreed that we will build 6 public pit latrines in Soweto, to be completed by February 2013, as well a number of other building projects in a nearby village.
1) Construction of a pit latrine for Namubiru Beatrice Est Cost: £430
Beatrice is aged 69 years and a member of NJECODA a community group established by with support from NVI, she is a widow and produced 14 children, however 3 died during the course, she needs this support to enhance the level of hygiene in her household, she has managed to dip up a pit, get a wire mesh and iron bar with support from the community.
1) Construction of a pit latrine for Napoko Maria Est cost: £430
She is an old and weak widow, she is aged 70 years and she leaves with 6 grandchildren, 4 out of her 6 children died, she has no support that is the reason why the community selected her for help. She has managed to dig up a pit by the help of her community.
1) Construction of a brick house for Mutegobwe Wilson Est cost: £925
Wilson is blind, not married because his wife died, he is 70 years and very weak, he lives with his sister who is also aged but helps produce food in the home. He lives with 7orphans that he looks after. He has no strength to construct a house yet he lives in a very dilapidated house, he really needs the support and the community pledges to support in the construction. He has raised 2 trips of sand to start the process of construction.
There are other building projects on the list. The more money that is raised, the more that can be built.
I am also raising money offline for other aspects of the slum project. Email me directly if you want to find out more.
