Story
On February 26, 2016, we will trek across the Sahara Desert for 10 days to raise much-needed funds for Alzheimer's Society.
This is not a holiday. It's far from it.
Don't be fooled into thinking we will be having a jolly in Africa. With daytime temperatures of up to 40c, we will be walking for seven hours a day, seeing nothing but sand for miles. We will be conserving water, so there will be no luxuries like showers. At night, we will be roughing it in tents as temperatures plunge to freezing. Mentally and physically, it will challenge us. But that's what we want to do - push ourselves to raise money for a charity which is close to our hearts.
After 10 days, we will have covered 100kms and will probably never want to see sand again!
So why Alzheimer's Society? Rachel's amazing nanna was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2013 and it is absolutely devastating for her whole family. But Alzheimer's Society has been fantastic to her family and have provided such great support. Her nanna is not getting better - Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms worsen over a number of years. But thanks to the charity, we have got invaluable help in caring for her.
Chris's grandma, who sadly passed away in January 2015, had dementia and required full-time care.
Alzheimer's is more than just memory loss. It is a disease which gradually takes away a loved one from you so that you grieve for them while they are still alive. As well as giving support to people with dementia, Alzheimer's Society also raises awareness of this horrible disease. Rachel and Chris hope that by doing their Sahara trek and raising money for the charity, they can help raise more awareness of it too.
Thank you to everyone who sponsors us for our Sahara challenge - we can't tell you how much it means to us xxx
