Did you know that in rural India, the average distance many women have to walk daily in order to collect water is 7 miles? Well I will be walking 7 miles on Sunday 13th September to get a feeling for what that walk must feel like
As many of you know, my redundancy last year was a great wake up call and amongst other things it helped me take stock of my life and start to rethink my priorities. It also made me feel a lot more humble, a feeling which I think many of us now have in the Square Mile. In addition it gave me the opportunity to develop my philanthropic interests and by a stroke of pure luck, namely me seeing an advert in a copy of the Big Issue which Lena bought on the spur of the moment, I stumbled across Jeevika Trust who were looking for new trustees.
I am now on the board of trustees of this wonderful organisation and intend to help in any way I can to tackle the problem of rural poverty in India. We want to raise awareness of the problems and raise money to really make a difference.
Jeevika Trust may only be a small organisation but it has a wide-ranging impact. The money raised at last year’s Walks for Water in the UK and France meant that 970 families, that’s nearly 6800 people, no longer have to walk for several hours a day to collect water. They can now collect safe water for their daily needs from a traditional rainwater-harvesting system just outside their villages.
